Berry Head to Sharkham Point is a haven for several nationally rare and threatened species which are dependent upon the thin limestone soils, mile climate and exposed conditions of the headland.
The Mendip Hills AONB covering 198 sq kms is recognised as one of England's most attractive landscapes. The area rises up from the Somerset Levels providing dramatic views of the Severn Estuary and across Somerset.
A mile long shingle beach in very quiet rural location. A sea wall protects the line of cottages and a pub that make up Beesands. The small village, with a public house and shop, lies behind a long shingle ridge. Behind the beach, Widdicombe Ley freshwater lake and grasslands provides an ideal location for wildlife and an opportunity for birdwatching.
The fossil bearing Jurassic limestone on this beach contains an abundance of pink crystals, which are striking in appearance. Access to the beach is good, but the rocky terrain makes walking difficult.
The reserve in Dartmoor National Park consists of 170 hectares and includes a small upland oakland surrounded by granite tors and moorland.
