Dartmoor is also the largest expanse of unglaciated upland in Great Britain and the largest granite surface in England. It has wild open moorland, granite tors and wooded river valleys. At its edge is a landscape of small fields enclosed by stone walls and hedge banks.
Dartmoor is of international importance for its blanket bog, wet heaths, upland oakwoods and cave system, and of at least national importance for its valley mires, Rhôs pasture and grass moor. Other notable habitats include species rich hay meadows and hedgebanks, granite tors, torrent rivers and lowland heath.
It is home to buzzards, dormice, mosses, plants and insects. Numerous rarities occur, particularly lichens and butterflies, and birds of moors, heaths and farmland. Globally threatened species include the southern damselfly, marsh fritillary butterfly and blue ground beetle.
