Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, , Devon
One of the most important places for wildfowl and wading birds.
- November to April for wintering and migratory birds
- May to July for wild flowers
Dawlish Warren is an area of sand dunes, mud flat and beach that lies at the mouth of the Exe. Thousands of birds come to feed, on migration or to spend the winter here.
The dunes and grassland have a host of special plants. Over 600 different types of flowering plants have been recorded on the Warren, including the Warren crocus on its only mainland site in Great Britain. This varied reserve has many different habitats include saltmarsh, fresh water pools, wet meadows and woodland.
A bird hide offers excellent views especially 2-3 hours either side of high tide. There is suitable access for wheelchairs and pushchairs as far as the Visitor Centre. Dogs are permitted on parts of the Warren but must be on leads. Guided walks and activities take place throughout the year. Telephone 01626 863980
