The wetlands of the South West are home to huge numbers of birds during the winter, and a wealth of wildlife during the summer. The Somerset Levels & Moors is one of the UK’s great wetlands, and home to curlews, bitterns, otters, dragonflies and an abundance of wild flowers. In winter it attracts over 80,000 waterbirds.
The Avalon Marshes in north Somerset is a stunning new wetland created from areas that have been dug for peat in the past. It is now home to otters, water voles and a host of other wildlife, as well as a tranquil and beautiful place for people to enjoy. Similarly, the Exe Estuary and Poole Harbour attract tens of thousands of waterbirds, including their famous flocks of the beautiful avocet.
